How to fix ASUS k45VM boot freeze problem when USB 3.0 connected

I have a Asus K45VM laptop which refuses to boot into the OS when any USB 3 device is plugged into a USB 3 port.

I will show what you have to configure in this machine (and probably others) to solve this.

Symptom: If you cold boot the laptop and a USB 3 device is plugged the "BIOS" will freeze at the Asus logo. Removing the device instantly unfreezes it, and after the Windows loading circle appears, you can plug the device with no problem, and it works fine after that.

System: Asus K45VM laptop. Bios maker is American Megatrends. Bios version 234, although this happens with older versions too. USB 3 device to test is a Vention USB 3.0 hub with nothing connected to it. Other devices fail as well, like card readers and external hard drives.

Solution: (Note: My Windows is not in English. I will try to translate the steps to english the best I can.)

Enter BIOS/UEFI Setup:
  1. Enter Windows.
  2. Start Menu, Configurations, Update and Security, Recovery, under Advanced Initialization click Restart Now. On the Menu that appears, click Troubleshhoting, then Advanced Options, UEFI Firmware Configuration. Windows will ask to reboot. Do that.
  3. After the restart, you will be in Aptio Setup Utility. Go to the Advanced tab, select USB Configuration and finally, XHCI Pre-Boot Mode. Mine was in "Auto".

You want that to be Enabled.
  4. Select Enabled, go back with Esc key, Save configuration and reboot.
  5. Once back in Windows, Power Off and test if the problem is solved.
Now my computer boots even with USB 3 devices plugged in.
